Students Participate in DSB1 Skills Ontario Competitions

These Board-hosted qualifying competitions took place at Timiskaming District Secondary School, Englehart High School, and Kirkland Lake District Composite School, in addition to Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology Kirkland Lake Campus who partnered with DSB1 to offer Skills Ontario Welding Competition on-site at Northern College Kirkland Lake.

Lisa Yee, Student Success Administrator with DSB1, says, “The ongoing partnership with Northern College offers students a hands-on opportunity to showcase their skills, learn from college instructors, and learn the vast career options in the skilled trades."

Approximately sixty DSB1 students competed at various Skills Ontario competitions, including 2D Character Animation, Cabinetmaking, Carpentry (Individual), Carpentry (Team of 2), Graphic Design (Studio Production), Home and Team Building (Team of 4), Photography, Robotics, TV and Video Production (Team of 2).

Through Skills Ontario, students meet and connect with other students and educators and complete hands-on experiential projects aligned with curriculum and industry standards while developing communication, problem-solving, team building, collaboration and adaptability skills.

The DSB1 skills competitions set the stage for the winners of the Board-led competitions who will advance to the Skills Ontario Provincial Competitions from May 1-3, 2023, in Toronto, Ontario. Students competing in Carpentry (Individual), TV and Video Production (Team of 2), and Welding will participate in Skills Ontario Qualifying Competitions on April 1, 2023, in North Bay, Ontario, to determine who will continue to the provincial level.

DSB1 looks forward to our students displaying their skills at the Skills Ontario Provincial Competitions.
